Automating Your RTI/MTSS Process, Part II: Tiering Criteria and Progress Monitoring

This second installment of our three-part series to help streamline your RTI/MTSS program focuses on improving student tiering decisions and progress monitoring. Remember, as we highlighted in Part I: Data Automation, these tips are applicable regardless of your RTI/MTSS process.
Determine Tiering Criteria
Now that all of your student data is aggregated in one place, let’s put it to work effectively. Use your aggregated student data, state learning standards, and observational evidence to create intervention tiering criteria for struggling learners. How does your district determine proficiency? Have tier 1 full group interventions made any impact on identified at-risk students? What are the cut-off metrics for students to qualify for your RTI/MTSS program at tier 2 and tier 3? How about exit criteria? How will you know when students need to advance to the next tier or exit the process?
While tiering criteria can certainly be determined and inputted into a shared file by hand, we recommend that you move this to a digital format that all involved staff members can reference as needed. It is then also easier to make on-the-spot revisions and ensure that all stakeholders are on the same page. Assign Intervention Tiers and Monitor Progress
Identify all of the students that meet level 2 or 3 tiering criteria across defined metrics and place them in small groups targeting similar skill gaps. This generally means that each kid in a designated group is receiving the same intervention plan. However, each learner’s progress should still be tracked separately. Intervention tiers and all participants should be documented clearly for all RTI/MTSS support staff to easily access and track progress.
Who will create, populate, and maintain the shared spreadsheet containing all required criteria?
How are you documenting RTI/MTSS progress? What is your procedure for scheduling team meetings, conferences, and documenting notes? We know that parent involvement in the child’s RTI/MTSS process can be critical to intervention success. If a parent is reiterating what you’re trying to do in the classroom, the student will benefit. That said, how are you capturing parent interaction and involvement in their child’s RTI/MTSS process?
While this can all be done on paper, we still recommend moving all data to a digital format. This protects you against damage and loss; it also streamlines information sharing and progress monitoring with the ability to reflect timely updates. The duplication of tiering assignments and intervening supports is also simplified through digital documentation. Identical intervention plans for students in the same tiering group can easily be copied and saved, saving support staff time and avoiding inconsistencies.
